Understanding Isolated Maps With Hatched(Striped) Pattern
Understanding Isolated Maps With Hatched(Striped) Pattern
HailTrace is the ONLY platform offering a hatched-pattern layer that highlights isolated, hail swaths at a glance! Not every storm produces total losses across its path. The new hatched pattern makes these storms easy to recognize at a glance, helping them plan canvassing routes more efficiently and set realistic expectations with property owners.
What Does “Isolated” Mean on a Hail Map?
The term "isolated" means the larger hailstones were observed, but they were not widespread or consistent throughout the storm area. When a meteorologist labels a hail swath as isolated,it indicates that hailstones of the specified size were scattered or less concentrated within the affected area. In other words, large hail (for example, golf-ball size) did occur, but not in high volume across the entire swath.
There are typically two scenarios where this applies:
Low Volume of Hail: The storm swath produced larger hail, but it fell sporadically — a few stones here and there instead of steady, widespread coverage.
Mixed Hail Sizes: Most of the storm dropped smaller hailstones, with occasional larger ones mixed in across the path.
**The screenshot below shows a "hatched" pattern where meteorologists have marked a hail swath with isolated hail.**
Note: Meteorologist-mapped hail swaths are the only events that will be labeled with isolated hail. Algorithm-generated maps will not display isolated hail.
